If you’re not quite ready to face the hoardes of people currently lined up to see Beauty and the Beast in the theatre, maybe it’s time to sit down with a copy of Moana instead. From the comfort of your own living room, you can watch this spunky chief-in-waiting rise up to lead her people back to their roots.
I have heard more than one person say that Moana is their new favourite Disney ‘princess’. I would have to agree. Feel free to debate the linguistics and the politics of ‘princess’ versus ‘future chief’ if you will. The crux of the argument is that this young girl is in line to lead her people. Her parents do not feel the need to look for a husband for her or adopt a son or look for another ‘rightful heir’. She was born to be a ruler.
One of the most striking things you will notice about Moana is her physical appearance. She is not blonde. She does not have blue eyes. Nor is she stick thin. Moana is strong, fit, and skilled at the tasks that her people need to keep them alive.
Another thing that struck about the Moana story is that sheaccepts and grows into her role as future chief while remaining respectful to the current chief, her father. Until it becomes impossible to remain on the island, she obeys her parents directive not to go beyond the reef. When she does finally go, it is with preparation and under the guidance of her grandmother.
Overall, the story of Moana serves to remind us that we can only live in the safe harbour for so long. At some point, we must prepare ourselves and sail beyond the reef to find out who we are and who we are really meant to be.
