I am not usually a big fan of fruit and chocolate together, but these orange dark chocolate bite sized morsels just might convert me.
Orange Dark Chocolate Bites
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1/8 tsp orange extract
- 2 tsp cream
- 1 egg
- 1 1/3 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1/ tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chunks
- zest of half an orange
Cream together butter and sugars
Add extracts, cream, and egg
In separate bowl, combine all dry ingredients.
Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture
Stir in chocolate and orange zest
On lightly floured surface, roll dough into a roughly 12" tube. Wrap and refrigerate at least 30 minutes
Preheat oven to 325 F.
Slice cookies into 24 pieces and place on parchment lined cookie tray.
Bake 15-20 minutes.
Cool on wire rack.
These cookies are a great ‘make ahead and bake when you need them’ cookie. If you are going to keep them, I recommend wrapping tightly in wax paper or plastic wrap and then placing them inside a freezer bag.
Don’t try to skip the chilling step or you will have giant puddles on your cookie sheet. And as with all ice box cookies, slicing them as evenly as possible will give you the best results. Chipits has a new baking product out call Inspirations 70% Cacao. I’ve found this works really well in this recipe. For orange extract, I find the Neilsen Massey to be the most potent. It may be tough to find outside of specialty stores. In that case, I’d recommend Club House.
